Name Above All Names
Can we be on a first-name basis with God? If God were to introduce Himself face-to-face, who do you think He would choose? The most righteous person He could find or the most powerful?
Enter Moses. Genesis 2-3 tells us Moses was a powerful man in Egypt’s government, but not even a powerful man could get away with killing an Egyptian guard. So, Moses ran into the wilderness, a fugitive from the law, wanted for murder.
One day, while tending his sheep, Moses saw a burning bush. He was curious, so he walked up to it. Out of the fire came a voice, “Moses…I am the God of your father.”
Whoa! After a back-and-forth discussion of why Moses, a criminal, should go back to Egypt to free the Hebrew slaves, Moses asked a courageous question. “What is Your name?”
You might not expect God to tell a murderer, but He did: “I AM WHO I AM.” The name of God, the Name above all names. Self-existent, eternal, unchangeable. No one created Him, no one can overcome Him, and no one can change Him. The most powerful name ever uttered. He revealed Himself to Moses, and He will reveal Himself to you.
This name was so sacred, a Hebrew priest or scribe dared not speak it or write it. In our translations, we use LORD to denote the Hebrew name Yahweh or Jehovah. In the Old Testament, it is written YHWH, the unpronounceable, unspellable name of the Most Holy God.
Most holy God, I AM WHO I AM. The wholeness His name represents: holiness, power, eternal presence, strength, and solid-rock-ness (I know that’s not a word), walks with you, teaches you, and loves you.
Jesus—my best Friend, your best Friend—is I AM WHO I AM. Can you process that? His power is within you, enabling you to endure your struggles. His love is within you, enabling you to love someone you can’t love on your own.
I AM WHO I AM. The completeness of God is within you.
Can you grasp this truth? When has the greatness of God enabled you to walk the path God set before you?

Thankful God knows me – and gives me the understanding of Him that He wants me to have. Thanks for the post.
So am I, Joni!
Our God can use any of us to be a witness and complete His work on earth. Like Moses, we often feel unworthy (I know I do), but numerous stories in the Bible remind us that God equips who He chooses to do His work. Thank you for sharing this message to inspire us to answer “YES!” when we are called.
I often feel unworthy, Katherine – never more than when I’m writing. Thank you for commenting!
Thank you, Sherry for sharing God’s word about his name. I hope you have a blessed day.
Thanks, Judy! I’m enjoying exploring His names
