Truths for Today:
We've all been on pins and needles as we watched Hurricane Alex enter the Gulf of Mexico. Those of us on the coast are use to being in a state of awareness through summer and early fall, but a June hurricane is a little unusual. I prayed for the people in northern Mexico and extreme south Texas being hit by Alex but I also whispered a prayer of thanks that my city was spared.
Even though we are hundreds of miles away from Alex, its outer fringes are reaching us. The gulf waters are choppy, the wind is blustery, and the rain comes in waves. As I sat in my rocker this morning, I watched the birds hunker down on the telephone wire that runs across my back yard. They are curled up into little balls, heads tucked under their wings, holding on tight. Oddly enough they are all facing into the wind, as though they are in agreement against the storm.
There have certainly been times in my life when I had to hunker down. Sometimes my security is choppy, my finances are blown around, or sorrow comes in waves. In these times, I can learn a lot from the birds.
I need to hunker down and hold on to God tight. My life may be swaying like the telephone wire out my window but He is stable and never changing. He's a firm foundation that will not shift in the battering waves.
I can shelter my thought and fears under the wings of His Word. His Word assures me of His love and tells me that He is faithful to keep all His promises. I can tuck my head under His words of comfort and strength and know that He is an ever-present refuge.
Most of all, the birds teach me of the power of togetherness. God has blessed me with so many Christian friends and family members that draw alongside me. They face the storm head on with me. They cover me with a blanket of prayer. If I try to face the storm alone I'll be defeated, but with the encouragement of my sisters and brothers in Christ, I can stand strong.
Are you in a bit of a storm right now? Is there an "Alex" moving through your life? Learn from the birds: hold on to God, take shelter in His Word and promises, and surround yourself with Christians who love and will support you.
Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8
Carry each other's burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:12
