Water in the desert
The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Isaiah 58:11
Ever been in a desert? Not one with tumbleweeds and dirt, but a desert of circumstances, emotion, or faith? I have, everyone has, at one time or another.
Isaiah 58:11 is God's promise that He's in the desert with us and that He'll care for us. These words bring comfort, peace, and hope.
The LORD will guide you always. . . Our Father is with us every step of the way. We're never alone. He's beside us and in front of us. Beside us, to assure us of His presence and His faithfulness. In front of us, as the perfect Pathfinder, to guide us around boulders and pitfalls. You might feel as though things will never get better, but rely on the One who will steer you safely to the other side.
He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land. . .Get real—How can He possibly satisfy our needs when we're moving through a sun-scorched land? And yet, He does. He satisfies our need for comfort by weaving the prayers others say for us into a cover that shields us from the blinding sun. He satisfies our need for hope by bring friends alongside us to support us and to remind us of His promises. Remember, Jesus was once in the desert. He knows exactly what we need.
[He] will strengthen your frame. . .Just when we think we can't take another step, He's there to strengthen us. He'll lead us to an oasis hidden in the shadow of a large stone. He'll offer us a bite of bread that was tucked away in the cleft of the rock. Refreshed and restored, our stride will be stronger.
You will be like a well-watered garden. . .a garden, bursting with blooms and heavy with fruit. Impossible—or is it? As we move through our day-to-day lives, we're a blessing and an inspiration. Many will be amazed that we aren't crippled by discouragement. Some will marvel at the peace on our faces. Others will wonder how we can have hope in a difficult situation and they will crave the strength and peace they see in us.
Like a spring whose waters never fail. . .Jesus promises to give each believer "water [that] will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into everlasting life." John 4:14. The Holy Spirit that lives within us is a spring of living water that bathes our souls, forever. He will never withdraw from us, leaving us dry and parched.
