Truths for Today:
Call on the Lord
This has been a difficult month for me. Tears, temper fits…I haven't always responded in a way that's pleasing to God. In the midst of this struggle, God led me to Psalm 120.
I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me. Save me, O Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues. What will he do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue? He will punish you with a warrior's sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree. Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar! Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war. Psalm 120
This might seem like a strange passage for God to use in the midst of stressful circumstances but it is full of gems that declare God's promises.
I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me.
How many times have you cried out to God, "Where are You?" "Don't You hear me?" I've cried these words out to Him several times in the past few days. The words in Psalm 120 promise me that He hears me and answers me. Notice it doesn't say, "I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me by snapping his fingers and taking my problems away." Sometimes He says "No." Sometimes He says, "You must walk through this valley but I will be with you." No matter His answer, we can trust Him.
Save me, O Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.
Sometimes we forget we have a powerful enemy who wants to destroy our joy and confidence in God. Satan whispers lies to us continuously. Frustration, despair, anger, hopelessness—I admit I listen to him far too often instead of listening to the truth of God's voice. God can and will save us from the confusion we feel when we listen to the enemy. Jesus said, "I am the truth." (John 14:6).
What will he do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue? He will punish you with a warrior's sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree.
Our minds are a battlefield! We're assaulted with lies from every side. But we don't fight alone. God is a Mighty Warrior who stands guard around our hearts and minds. He drives Satan's lies from our minds with the sharp arrows of His truth. The burning coals of His Word build an impenetrable wall around our hearts. When faced with God's Word, Satan will run! He cannot stay in the presence of God.
Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar! Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war.
We listen to the news, we see morality decay around us, and we wonder, "What is this world coming to?" "Why doesn't God do something?" But still, God leaves His people here to be His witnesses in this evil, sinful world. We live among those who hate God and His Word. We are people of faith, peace, and love and yet we encounter ridicule on every side. How can we stay strong? How can we resist the temptations that surround us?
Psalm 120 is followed immediately by words of hope and power: I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2). Help is only a cry away. When we look to God—the Almighty Creator whose power spoke the universe into being—He comes. He fills us with the assurance of His love. He gives us the hope of His promises. He strengthens us with His presence.
Are you facing difficult days? Lift your eyes to the Lord.
