Call on the Lord

I don't handle crises well. Tears, temper fitsÖI donít always responded in a way thatís pleasing to God. Several years ago, in the midst of a struggle, God led me to Psalms 120.

I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me. Save me, O Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues. What will he do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue? He will punish you with a warrior's sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree. Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar! Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war. Psalm 120

This might seem like a strange passage for God to use in the midst of stressful circumstances but it is full of gems that declare Godís promises.

I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me.
How many times have you cried out to God, "Where are You?" "Donít You hear me?" Iíve cried these words out to Him several times in the past few days. The words in Psalm 120 promise me that He hears me and answers me. Notice it doesnít say, "I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me by snapping his fingers and taking my problems away." Sometimes He says "No." Sometimes He says, "You must walk through this valley but I will be with you." No matter His answer, we can trust Him.

Save me, O Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.
Sometimes we forget we have a powerful enemy who wants to destroy our joy and confidence in God. Satan whispers lies to us continuously. Frustration, despair, anger, hopelessnessóI admit I listen to him far too often instead of listening to the truth of Godís voice. God can and will save us from the confusion we feel when we listen to the enemy. Jesus said, "I am the truth." (John 14:6).

What will he do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue? He will punish you with a warrior's sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree.
Our minds are a battlefield! Weíre assaulted with lies from every side. But we donít fight alone. God is a Mighty Warrior who stands guard around our hearts and minds. He drives Satanís lies from our minds with the sharp arrows of His truth. The burning coals of His Word build an impenetrable wall around our hearts. When faced with Godís Word, Satan will run! He cannot stay in the presence of God.

Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar! Too long have I lived among those who hate peace.
The truth is, I have a choice where I live. I can stay, overwhelmed by the mountains of difficulties. I can camp in the desert of loneliness or despair. OrÖI can turn to God and ask Him to take me by the hand and guide into His joy and peace. He might not change my circumstances but He can change my heart. He will give me the courage to say, "Too long I have lived here!" God offers me many precious promises. I have to choose to rely on Him.

Psalms 120 is followed immediately by words of hope and power: I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth (Psalms 121:1-2). Help is only a cry away. When we look to God—the Almighty Creator whose power spoke the universe into beingóHe comes. He fills us with the assurance of His love. He gives us the hope of His promises. He strengthens us with His presence.

Are you facing difficult days? Lift your eyes to the Lord.
